Every Lineage 2 Essence character carries a second character. The guardian fights next to you, wears its own gear, levels on its own bar, and at high levels contributes a slice of your total damage that is bigger than most players budget for.
It is also the system with the thinnest English documentation. Most pages cover one guardian and skip the rules that decide whether your materials are wasted. This page covers the rules.
Two families, two sets of rules
| Family | Members | What they bring |
|---|---|---|
| Animal | Kookaburra, Tiger, Wolf, Buffalo, Hawk, Dragon, Fox | Cheaper to raise, species skills, still called pets in some menus and item names |
| Humanoid | Raven, Vulcan, Glassia | Longer skill lists, wear gear like a character, stronger late |
The rename to animal guardians was cosmetic: dialogue and several item names still say pet. Humanoid guardians came later and behave more like a second party member than a stat boost with legs.
Guardian's Essence is the currency
Essence is experience in item form. Feed it to a guardian and the guardian levels.
- Grades: low, mid and high. Same function, different amounts of experience.
- Family suffixes: items come as - Pet and - Mercenary. Use the one that matches the guardian you are feeding.
- Sources: hunting in the Bee Hive, Guardian Supplies, and extraction of another guardian.
That last source is the one worth understanding, because it turns every abandoned pet into fuel.
Extraction: how to recycle a guardian
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Level range | Guardian level 50 to 90 only |
| Excluded | Raven, Vulcan, summoned guardians, guardians wearing gear |
| What you get | Level 50 to 81 gives mid grade Essence, 82 to 90 gives high grade |
| What it costs | The guardian is consumed, and all of its experience comes out |
Practical read: do not extract at 50. Level the guardian to 82 first and take the high grade. That is one grade for a few evenings of auto-hunt, and the grade is what actually moves a new guardian.
Evolution and the adena wall
The first evolution opens at guardian level 40, and levels 5 to 10 cost nothing. The second evolution opens at 80, and from level 11 the game charges adena: 500,000 at 11, 1,000,000 at 12, then 1,500,000, 2,000,000 and 2,500,000 at 15.
Read it as two phases. The first 80 levels cost time. Everything after costs adena, and the curve is steep enough that a guardian is a budget decision as much as a build decision.
Skill books, in order
| Tier | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Guardian Book, Chapter 1 / 2 | Starter skills |
| Enhanced Guardian Book | Second tier skill |
| Rare Guardian Book | Third tier skill |
| Heroic Guardian Book | Strong skill, usually named after it, for example Heroic Guardian Book - Avalanche |
| Legendary Guardian Book | One signature skill per guardian, for example Raven's Gate |
The naming matters when you shop. A book teaches one skill to one guardian. Nothing in this system is universal except the Essence.
Gear and consumables
A guardian wears accessories the same way your character does: guardian rings, earrings, a locket and a pendant. Upgrade coupons for those accessories come out of guardian boxes, and the pendant line starts at level 1 and climbs. This is the part of the system that quietly decides late-game damage, because accessory stats multiply what the skills already do.
Consumables matter too. Guardian HP recovery potions and combat rations keep a guardian fighting through a long session. If you have ever wondered why someone's guardian never seems to die during a three-hour auto-hunt, the answer is usually a stack of rations and a healing pet skill, not a secret build.
Controlling it during a fight
Guardians run on their own AI, and the UI lets you intervene from the guardian HUD. Most players never touch it. The two moments worth the extra click are a clutch heal and a reposition before a boss mechanic, and both are easier than re-summoning a dead companion.
How to choose a guardian
- Name your main content first. Dense pack farming, single-target bosses, or PvP.
- Match the tool to it. Control for packs, sustain for long solo fights, burst or reflect for PvP.
- Check the accessory market before you commit. Everyone reads the same tier list, so one guardian's gear is always overpriced.
- Re-evaluate after a major update. Guardian balance follows the class patch cycle.
If your pick is Glassia, the Glassia guide covers her full kit and what her box contains. If you are still choosing the class she stands next to, read the class tier list. Not installed yet? The download and install guide covers the launcher.
What Rose Vain changed
Before Rose Vain, extracted Essence was tied to the type it came from. Since that update, extracted Essence works across types, so a retired animal guardian can fund a humanoid. The rest of that patch, including the Blood Rose class and the new hunting grounds, is in the Rose Vain overview.
Common mistakes
- Buying a contract and no books. The contract is the cheap half.
- Extracting at level 50 for mid grade Essence you could have doubled.
- Feeding Essence into a capped guardian. Evolution first, levels second.
- Picking a guardian for content you do not actually play.
FAQ
How many guardians are there?
The knowledge base lists nine long-standing guardians: Kookaburra, Tiger, Wolf, Buffalo, Hawk, Dragon, Fox, Raven and Vulcan. Glassia was added with Rose Vain, and later updates can add more, so check the guardian window in the client for the current roster.
Can I own more than one guardian?
Yes. Players accumulate spares, which is exactly why the extraction system exists. What you field in a fight is one guardian at a time.
Do guardians work while I am offline?
The guardian is part of your combat setup, so it matters for auto-hunt sessions. How it behaves in full offline mode depends on the current client build. Check it once in game instead of trusting a 2024 forum post.
Is Guardian's Essence tradable?
Essence exists in sealed form, and sealed items can usually be mailed. Read the item tooltip before you plan a purchase, because the restrictions differ between grades and families.
Which guardian is best for a new character?
Whatever you can level and gear first. An average guardian at level 80 beats a perfect one at level 40, and the early levels are free.
