Patch day is the only time in an MMO when being early is worth more than being good. Everyone is confused, the auction house has not repriced, and the new content is empty.
Here is the order I would do things in. It takes about two hours and it saves resources you would otherwise burn on assumptions.
1. Read the class section before you log in
Not the whole patch note. The class section, and only for the classes you actually play.
Ask one question per skill: did the numbers change, or did the mechanic change? A numbers change means your build works slightly worse or better. A mechanic change means your rotation is wrong and you will not notice from the damage meter alone.
2. Re-test your main before spending anything
Take your character to the same hunting spot you used last week. Same buffs, same consumables, ten minutes.
You are not measuring damage. You are measuring whether the loop still feels the same. If you are suddenly pressing a skill that no longer does what you expect, stop. Fix the build before you enchant anything.
3. Do not reroll on day one
Every big patch gets a tuning pass two to four weeks later. The class that looks broken on day one is often the class that gets adjusted first. Wait for that pass. Rerolling twice in a month is how people quit games.
4. Check the new content while it is empty
New dungeons and hunting grounds are most valuable in the first weeks. The drop tables are fresh, the crowds have not arrived, and nobody knows the route yet, which means nobody is gatekeeping it.
5. Clear your event and mail windows
Updates expire old event items. Compensations and coupons usually arrive with a claim deadline. Open the mail, read the event tab, and claim what is there before it turns into a grey icon you cannot use.
6. Write down what broke
One line per issue. Which skill, which zone, which quest. If the patch broke something for you, it broke it for a few thousand other people too, and the bug report gets fixed faster when it is specific.
The three mistakes that cost the most
- Enchanting before testing. A rework can invert which stat your class wants. Your old gear may now be the wrong gear.
- Buying the new meta on day one. Prices on "the new best item" are set by panic, not by supply.
- Skipping the compensation window. Free resources expire. That is the entire design.
Patch days are also the best time to check whether your class guide is still honest. If a site has not touched its guide since the last update, it has not touched it since the game changed. Ours carries a revision date for exactly that reason.
